Happy Dollars

Gary Miller noted for the club that with the induction of Jimmy Ssekawaabe the club now has 80 members.  He also thanked the Rain Gods for holding off on him last night unlike last week.  Gary's brewery tour or Red Rock Brewery couldn't happen because the place was having a wedding but he a nice lunch their anyway.

Steve Harris honored his mother's 90th birthday.

Don Bonner along with Mike and Heather were at the district meeting and represented us well as they did a presentation on why we have been so successful.  Don announced that he was going to be a grandfather again and that they were going to be moving to West Hartford from NY.

Bill Barnes was happy to report that his wife Pat was home from the hospital and doing well after dealing with some very challenging cardiac conditions.  She had great care at UConn and hopes to be able to attend the Presidents Dinner as her first social event in 3 months.  He also wanted to invite everyone to Saturday nights Farmington Valley Symphonies final classical concert of the season.

Larry Haber is going up to Newton, MA tonight to see a production of Julius Caesar which is being directed by his son at the high school.  (Editors Note:  Production was fabulous)

Phil Ferrari is happy that the Red Sox and Yankees are both in first place as they should be.  He will be going to Austin, TX to on trip that he won at the Rotary Auction.

Phil Mikkelson reminded us of the 5/18 trip to the Yard Goats.  He also announced that his son has just gotten out of prison so everything is good.  (Editors Note:  Phil is joking, I think)

Capri Frank shared a Capri moment with us as she is genuinly happy about a lot of things from President Don's leadership to the sharing of happy dollars to good spirits in the room.  She was also happy to be at Shop Rite at 7 AM because of the amazing Mother's Day.  She also indicated how special Mother's Day is to all moms and dads that sometimes have to be mom. She also wanted to mention Nancy who she still calls Mrs. Nation for modeling for her, as she was growing up, how to deal with challenges and still models this today.

Jolly Lux was happy to no longer being the only Ugandan in the club as well as tribute to President Don all his help.  She reminded folks that GLO was having a fund raiser GLOFest Saturday June 9th 5:30 - 9 at the North House.

Cherie Walton
Tanzania Nursing Scholarship Program

Our own Cherie Walton was today's speaker.  She described a program whose goal is to support women in Tanzania to complete their nursing and midwifery certifications.  Why Tanzania?  The need in Tanzania is overwhelming the US has 1 doctor per 1,000 people, Tanzania has 1/10 this number.  Tanzania only has 0.4 nurses per 1,000 people, the US has 9.  Why women?  The mortality rate for mother's dying in childbirth is 4/1000.  It is 0.14/1,000 in the US.  Infant Mortality rates are extraordinarily high at 41/1,000 (US 6).  Only about half of births are attended by a trained midwife the rest by untrained individuals often mothers or sisters.  A $985 scholarship will pay the cost of tuition and food with a little extra for pocket money for a year.  The program awards scholarships to support the 2nd and 3rd year of training after the student has proved themselves in the first year.  Awards are given to female students with financial need and good academic performance.

“The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do”:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all Concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
