General Announcements

Larry Sullivan handed out the packets for the golf outing to be held on August 27. There will be a new smaller ad book to make it more convenient and appealing to golfers and less expensive to produce. Sue Budde asks that you get your ad info right to make it easier to include. This is especially important with the tournament coming earlier than last year. New members are encouraged to get ads as soon as possible. They may need to check to see if the company they know about is already being approached by another member.

Ike Eickenhorst is looking for speakers in July and beyond. While we generally hear from representatives of nonprofits in the area, a speaker on any topic that would not be blatant self-promotion would be welcome. All members are expected to provide a speaker occasionally. Ike would prefer not to call and make assignments as was done in the past. Contact Ike if you have a question about an appropriate speaker or available date.

Awards and Community/International Service Grants

Gary Roman presented a check for $ 1,000 to Focus Center on Autism. Linda and Yvonne Garner received the check and spoke about the materials they would be able to purchase with these funds.

Rollie Sterrett and Gary Roman presented a check to the local VFW post for $750. Gary also presented a check for $250 from Collinsville Savings Bank. This will be used to help veterans in the area. Those who need the most help are the homeless and the very young. There is an inn in Hartford to help the homeless. There is also support for those who want to attend Tunxis Community College. This provides funds to help with rent and bills. This is especially meaningful to Gary whose son-in-law has served several tours of duty in the military.

Presentation
Luiz & Bridget de Moura Castro

We were honored to have Luiz de Moura Castro play for our membership and friends. Luiz is an Avon resident, a neighbor of President Don, and known to many near and far, mostly as a professor of music at the Hartt School. He has also been recorded on more than 55 CD's. Luiz was accompanied in some pieces by his wife Bridget De Moura Castro. Luiz de Moura Castro is a graduate of the National School of Music, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (summa cum laude) and of the Lorenzo Fernandez Academy of Music, Rio de Janeiro and the Liszt Academy, Budapest.

A Native of Rio de Janeiro, he gave his debut recital at the age of 9 at the Teatro Municipal after winning a competition. Moura Castro has appeared with the Orchestre de Chambre, Lausanne, Lisbon Radio Orchestra, Filarmonichi di Turino, Bratislav & Janacek orchestras, Yaroslav Symphony, Russia, the Dallas, Fort Worth, Hartford and Syracuse symphonies, besides all the major Brazilian orchestras and Parabobo Orquestra, Venezuela. Solo recitals include Piccolo Scala, Milano Teatro Ghione, Roma Salle Gaveau, Paris; Palau de la Musica, Barcelona; Rubinstein Hall, St. Petersburg Academy; Merkin Hall, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. He was invited by Lily Kraus to teach at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth in 1968. In 1998, he began a visiting professorship at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. In addition, he works in Rio de Janeiro as a visiting professor at the Pro Arte Seminarios de Musica. He was chair of the Piano Department at the Juan Pedro Carero School of Music in Barcelona, Spain.

Among the pieces played were works by Chopin and Debussy, as well as Hungarian and Spanish compositions.

In lieu of an honorarium, President Don created a floral arrangement in thanks for the wonderful program.

Mail Bag We received thank you notes from Chrysalis and Avon Dollars for Scholars. Carrie Firestone sent a note expressing her excitement to be part of Rotary and its service to the community.

“The FOUR-WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do”:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all Concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
