Birthdays

Joanna Santiago, whose birthday is next week, is a 2nd generation Chiropractor specializing in Sports Medicine, Integrative Care, and she does Acupuncture.  Joanna's daughter will become the 3rd generation of Chiropractors in her family.  She notes that Rotary has been there for the Celebrations and the heart aches.

Larry Sullivan, after hiding in Florida for February, birthday was acknowledged.  Just spent a month in Florida and drove back yesterday through the wind storm.  Happy to be back except for the weather.

Happy Dollars

Sue Biddle was happy for Joanne Santiago's birthday.

Gary Miller was skiing in New York State with his kids and grand kids and all had a great time in spite of some rain.

Linda Pendergast reported that Nancy Nation had a close call.  Saturday she went into the hospital with a pulmonary embolism.  This was very serious and we could have lost her.  She came home on Wednesday afternoon.  Surgery has been postponed for at least a month.  She is starting chemo today.  Craig is doing well through all this and Nancy has a great attitude.  She appreciates the cards.  Please keep them coming as it is very important to her and keep her in your prayers.  Linda and Paul are driving to Florida tomorrow with a stop in DC to see the new African-American museum.  They will be in Florida for a couple of weeks.

Gary Hyde is going to see Mets in Port St. Luce, Florida.  He will be playing golf and visiting friends as well.  He also shared a factoid that he discovered on page 74 of the 106 page of instructions for the 1040 tax form.  The IRS will not take checks for more than 100 Million Dollars.  If you want to send them more you will have to break it up into separate checks.

Richard Heath found a voucher for 14 cents in a slot machine.  He happily announced that he was able to turn this 14 cents into 8 cents.

Ted Cowles was happy to continue his Maple Sugaring update by noting that they have already boiled 165;0 gallons of sap.  The recent cold weather has temporally stopped the sap flowing.

Len Dunston is happy that he has cleaned out his store.  He does have 4 Cherry Hutches that need a good home.  He is also heading to Florida shortly to see his brother.

President Don noted that a good friend of his Charlie Scudder passed away and also his mother-in-law has also passed away at the age of 95.

Heather Pantano announced, to much applause,  that she is pregnant and due 8/16.  She and her husband do not plan on finding out the sex of the baby before birth.

Announcements

4/1: Taste of the Valley

Colleen Grasso announced that the auction committee is encouraging members to consider obtaining items that could be combined in baskets for the auction. If you are in touch with a merchant who has something appropriate for this effort, it would be appreciated.

Salin Low announced that approximately $400 has been raised for the wine pull. Each member is asked to give $20. The wine will be purchased at M&R. Getting the case rate makes our effort go further. We need to raise $1200 to have a fun and profitable event. Several people have been making bags for the bottles. Members not at a meeting can send the $20 to Salin at 12 Meadowview Court, Canton 06019.

Roaring Brook Nature Center

Roaring Brook Nature Center was founded in 1948 by Canton resident Una Storrs Riddle and was originally known as the Canton Children’s Nature Museum. In 1964, as a result of a bequest to the State of Connecticut, the adjacent 100-acre Werner Farm became available to the Nature Center as a wildlife sanctuary and outdoor classroom. A new building in 1966 provided larger exhibit space and allowed for expanded programming opportunities.

RBNC maintain five miles of trails on the adjacent State-owned Werner’s Woods property. This refuge is home to a variety of native wildlife species – over 150 bird species have been sighted on the property. Outdoor gardens provide opportunities for visitors to view wildflowers, birds and butterflies in season.

They serve more then 13,000 visitors a year, with 6,000 students coming for their outreach programs.  The center provides rehabilitation for more than 300 animals a year,

The RBNC is in the midst of a campaign to expand the Nature Center to be able provide families, children and adults with new and exciting educational programs about the natural world around us, while also providing first rate care for the injured and orphaned wildlife that is brought to their door.  The goal is $700,000 with $400,000 raised so far.
