The Experience of Having a Disabled Child
Fay, Rick, and Danny Lenz

I can't do justice to the Lance's very personal story.  What stands out for me their love of their son, the pride they have in his accomplishments, and their desire to help others.  What also is clear is Dan, their son, and his pride of accomplishment as well as a wicked sense of humour.  The Lance's journey began in 1980 when Dan was born as the youngest of 6 boys.  He was diagnosed early as having an intellectual disability with no recognized syndrome.  Initially, the doctors feared that he would never walk or talk and need to be in a sheltered workshop his entire live.  With 5 brothers and lots of determination, the Lance's set out to make sure Dan's life would be better than that.  He benefited from early intervention services.  In school, the parents pushed for more inclusion, a concept that was new at the time and he grew throughout his school experiences.  In middle school, he was named the student who had contributed most to the school.  In High School, he was on the swim team and managed the soccer team.

The problem for the Lance's and for all parents of children with disabilities, is what happens after the school years.  It is here that they give much credit to FAVARH whose support has helped them in accessing benefits and supporting Dan in meeting his goals.  Dan told us that he had 3 major goals.  He wanted to go to college like his brothers.  He did.  He graduated from the Farmington Valley Transition Academy at the University of Hartford.  He wanted a job.   He has one at the Davidson Company in Newington, which is a food warehouse.  FAVARH provides transportation and a job coach.  He wanted to live in his own place, away from mom and dad.  He is.  He has an apartment in Avon with a roommate.  FAVARH staff helps him with his bills, shopping, doctor's visits and transportation.

The Lance's are concerned that others will not be able to get the help that they have received and her grateful to Rotary's support of FAVARH.  They know that they will not always be here to help their son and without FAVARH and DDS funding the outcome could have been very different,  They are worried that the state budget cuts will not enable others in their situation to lead the independent lives they deserve.

“The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do”:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all Concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
