Birthdays

Our Leader!

President Don celebrated his birthday on February 5. He's glad that he has been meeting his goals for his year as club president and will keep working for the rest of the year. He is also happy to be collecting his first social security check. He did call out Larry Sullivan, whose birthday is the same date, for hiding out in Florida for the big day. (Don't worry. We'll remember when he returns.)

Happy Dollars

(Note: At the beginning of the meeting, we learned that Nancy Nation's cancer has recurred. Many of those who spoke were thinking of her. See below about sending cards.)

Larry Haber was happy about his mother-in-law at 96. He described her as having no filter between brain and mouth.

Dale Bronson was happy about the 4th anniversary of his bone marrow transplant. He spoke about the difficulty of making plans when he felt so sick and had been told he would die soon. He made a donation to the Rotary Foundation, because he feels he now has a future and wishes the same for Nancy.

Tim Legeyt was thinking of both Nancy and Dale He had successful surgery twenty years ago to remove melanoma, which has not returned.

Hank Frey was happy to be back after a month away. He was also happy to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his marriage to the lovely Jean. He was relieved that she had only threatened to leave once in the fifty years. Congratulations!

Rollie Sterrett read another of his spontaneous jokes (See picture) on a theme about the attractions and challenges of getting older.

Paul Mikkelson gave $10 for ten things: 1. Hank's anniversary; 2. Dale's recovery; 3. Tim's service to the state in difficult times; 4. Don's birthday; 5. National Heart Month; 6. Upcoming Superbowl for a Giants cum Patriots fan; 7. He and wife annie going to see Sabrina Waqar; 8. through 10. Chuck Joseph, Josh Gillooly, and the TOTV team for the new brochure.

Rich Heath only had $1, but he was very happy for the success of his second cataract surgery. He thought we were looking good.

Don Rossler was happy that his twins were about to turn 16, except that means he will have to endure 32 hours of supervised driving with each of them.

Ben Dunning gave $40 because he had not been at meetings for four months. In December Ben, who was adopted met his birth brother and sister, although his birht mom died at 40. He will be going to Florida to meet other family members.

Announcements

Brochures were handed out for TOTV, so members can contact friends and associates. The above graphic was sent out by Michael Mezheritskiy and is good for email contacts. Posters will be coming.

Josh Gillooly said the concern is getting help for Colleen Grasso for the auction. He considered someone who missed the meeting, but thought that might not build better friendships. There will be further discussion of that dilemma this week.

Salin Low announced that we will have the wine pull once again. It seemed to work best last year to have members donate $20 each. Then the wine can be purchased at M&R. We get the case 10% discount for a large order, so the money goes further. Please give Salin your money as soon as possible.

Gary Hyde announced that members will receive tickets on Feb. 17. You wouldn't want to miss and slow down your sales.

Nancy Nation As mentioned above, Nancy is facing treatment for a recurrence of cancer. Husband Craig is also recovering from surgery, so they have a very full plate. She has asked for our prayers and always appreciates cards and notes. Their address is: 71 Old Wood Road, Avon, 06001.

Presentation

Our speaker was not able to be there, so we asked Tim Legeyt to give us his state of the state address. He told us that the legislature needs to find $3 Billion over the next two years. He sits on the appropriations committee and realizes what a daunting task this will be. He thinks that the answer must come from cuts in spending, because further tax increases will continue the difficulties the state has faced trying to recover from the great recession. Last year they faced a $870 million shortfall, and it was very tough finding funds. Now it looks as if there must be cuts to "muscle and bone" in the state budget. Tim and his colleagues have a tough job!
