Birthdays

Larry Haber wonders when he will be old enough to quit working so hard. He works three jobs: Institute of Living; private psychotherapy practice; teaching at CCSU. He began in Rotary back into the last century at another club. Happy Birthday!

Peter Vignati has been in our club for fifteen years or more and is a past president. He was brought into the club by Phil Schenck, who was town manager of Avon at the time. Now Peter lives in Bloomfield, and Phil is town manager in Bloomfield. He thinks the birthdays are coming faster every year. His birthday is actually this Wednesday, maybe the same as Heather Pantano's baby. In his work with Edward Jones he has three assistants - one a client of Favarh. He has been involved in many activities in the club including the youth exchange program, which he misses, and construction projects. Happy Birthday!

Happy Dollars

Gary Miller enjoyed the district golf tournament and won the putting contest.

Dale Bronson was at Yankee Stadium last week with Peter Vignati. There was a storm delay and they left early, missing some of the action in the Yankees' win. He was also happy about his visit to Yale the next day. He found out that he is cancer free and has good blood counts. His next appointment is in October when his donor will be in CT. He expects to get the ultimate pic with the two people who saved his life.

Larry Haber was headed on a one-day trip to Kansas City where he will meet up with a friend he hasn't seen since 1967.

Gary Hyde was also happy about the district tournament. He is happy that his grandchildren are coming although he described it as the chaos moving north.

Evan Cooper put in $1 for Joanne Santiago who was in Australia. Her own happy dollar was for her son Ben who will stay in Namibia another year. He will be home in November and will speak to the club.

Phil Ferrari, a devoted RedSox fan, was headed to Fenway. However, the RedSox were going to be in NYC. Phil was going to see James Taylor. We heard that Paul Mikkelson was headed to Yankee Stadium during the weekend.

Rollie Sterrett read a joke about a hot mama. We had been missing his jokes.

Arnie Goldman had a 60' pine tree near his how shatter and do all sorts of damage, including wiping out all electrical devices in his house. Painful!

Bill Barnes put in a happy dollar in honor of Tom and Mary Ellen Voorhees's 60th anniversary the day before and gave credit Mary Ellen for the success of the marriage. Tom said he was happy that they had had 45 good years -a .750 average in baseball would make him an all star.

Jolly Lux was happy about the anti-seizure program at her medical camp in Uganda. The program is growing and has helped 250+ people to be seizure free, which also allows them to lead better lives by being employed and doing the ordinary things of life.

Michelle Hagan was happy to be back from her vacation in ME. She is amazed that her daughter Jillian is now 13 and getting so grown up. She is now with U.S. Trust in West Hartford and happy with her new group.

Salin Low was happy to have 5,000 grocery bags donated by Chuck Joseph and ShopRite of Canton. They will be used to make mats for homeless people to sleep on - water proof and insulated.

Announcements

Nancy Nation remained every one that she and Craig would once again be hosting the Pencil Box party at their home on Thursday, August 24th at 5:30.

Larry Sullivan indicated that 8/18 is the deadline for bulletin ads.  All advertisers from the last 2 years should be contacted. We'll take golfers until the day of the tournament. He is hoping for 180.  There is also a new opportunity to have your company Logo imprinted on a sleeves of golf balls.

Kathleen Parr still needs some auction items. So far she has not heard from some of the golf clubs that donated foursomes in the past. Members are encouraged to contact any club with which they have a connection.

Steve Harris reminded members about Celebrate Avon (FKA Avon Day), which will be on September 23. He will need about a dozen volunteers.

Club Website

Without trying to explain something that makes sense visually, I will give you some of the highlights. Gary has a training manual with screen shots for anyone who is interested.

  • The software is known as ClubRunner and is used by many clubs.
  • There are ads on the homepage, which members have paid for. For $100/year your business can have an ad. We like to get 5-6 ads to defray the cost of the software.
  • People who want to advertise or play golf can sign up with PayPal using either cash or credit card.
  • There is a place to add anyone interested in receiving the Early Riser.
  • Many documents can be found on the website, including grant application forms for Community Service and International Service.
  • Make-ups can now be entered on the home page.
  • The member area where one can find information about members or send a club-wide email requires a password. The default password for members is firstname.lastname.5482. If you can't remember your password or user name, there is a place to request it by entering your last name and the email address you use to receive the Early Riser.
There is more, but this should get you started. Gary will surely be able to help you with the rest.

“The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do”:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all Concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
