Happy Dollars

Kurt Lux was happy to announce his recent promotion at First America Company. He hopes his new duties, with concurrent improved income wil allow Jolly to devote more time to her charitable activities in Africa.

Paul Mikkelson was happy to report he visited his Mom, who resides in Windsor.  She surprised him with her personal donation of $50.00 towards TOTV. He also reported that FAVARH has previously assembled and offered as many as 170 baskets for auction at their Riverdale event.

Joanne Santiago was happy to honor her son's 26th birthday and thanked everyone who called with kind words after her recent fall.
She also reminded everyone to make their birthday donation to the Rotary Foundation.

Tom Voorhees wished Paul and all the other CPA Rotarians fair thee well, until at least April 16th. We wont be seeing them much!

Ted Cowles was happy to provide a detailed report on the maple sugaring industry. He taps 600 trees and has boiled 1000 gallons so far.
He remains unsure if this will be a good season or not as warm weather causes the trees to heal, and seal, their tap holes over a period of about 6 weeks. Cold weather, and snow cover on the ground slows that and allows continued sap harvesting. He will know by April 1 what the verdict on the season will be.

Gary Hyde was happy to report that the April 1 TOTV regular tickets will be distributed today and next week and that we should return those we dont sell. For VIP Tickets see Chuck Joseph.

Jolly Lux was happy to see Kyong and Hap, and to again thank the ramington Club for their gift of $500.00 to her charitable work in Africa. Those funds have been used to help support Kristin,  the student we have been told about previously. She is now in a safer school, with aunt close by looking after her.

Salin Low was happy about the preparations for TOTV so far, but indicates we need more baskets.

Kyong Wilson reminds us she is looking for a leadership person.

Hap Leabman is happy to see all of us and to be here.

Rollie Sterrett made still another entry in his Retirement Joke Series...this one about a forgetful man and his forgetful wife. Ask Rollie for details.

Don Bonner was happy to report that the official signing with FAVARH is upcoming.

Presentation

Author Carrie Firestone

"Give Yourself Permission to Create"

Brian O'Donnell introduced author Carrie Firestone, who he had met at Barnes & Noble Booksellers. Carrie has written two books and was a teacher in NYC previously. Her second and most recent book, "The Unlikelies" includes a mention of Rotary and the theme of "Vigilante D0-Gooder Kids" who fight cyber-bullying, in her words.

Carrie's topic was how one can re-awaken long suppressed or ignored childhood creative passions and used her experience becoming an author as a model for this transformation. People often ask her how she became an author, and are inevitably surprised to learn she wrote her first book at 45 years old.

People pursue their creative dreams as children, but as adults those passions are often not associated with the careers they end up in. "I want to address the children in the room", Carrie said. She addressed the process she used to return to her passion for writing.

To people she meets that are spiritually lost, she asks: "What did you like to do when you were nine or ten years old?" "What was the one thing your drawn to?"

When she, like many of us were young, we were still encouraged to play, and specifically to play outside. She did all that but also wrote poetry an short stories, as well as enjoyed traveling.

Carrie's message is simply this: "Give yourself permission to create!" and rediscover your inner, childlike self. You will be happier for it!
