Birthdays

Phil Ferrari upcoming birthday was celebrated by the club.  Phil said that in the next two weeks, he would be turning 65, been married for 30 years, and was retiring officially and voluntarily.

Happy Dollars

Gary Miller is going to his daughter's house in upstate NY to celebrate Labor Day with 3 of his grand kids.  His daughter in Baton Rouge is finally back in their house after a year because of storm flooding and is looking to send the trailer that they have been living in to Texas to help.

Ann Clark shared with the club that she was celebrating her 55 anniversary, in spirit, with Pat.  She also that her granddaughter Sheila who is doing an internship at Mass General was co-author of an article printed in a medical journal based upon her volunteer work at St. Francis last year.

President Don fined himself a buck for forgetting his page.  He was also thrilled that the ad book was done and in press.  The ad book is up to a record 80 pages plus cover.

Nancy Nation informed the club that the ad books cover page was blown up to poster size and used to explain Rotary to the class we support.   Nancy also announced that Hank Frey was home after spending 20 days in the hospital.  His immune system is still too compromised for visitors, but he greatly appreciates the cards and e-mail.

Robin DiNicola shared that she had a great experience at the Midas shop owned by Brian O'Donnell.

Tom Voorhees was at a Yard Goats game, which was great, and ran into Chris Ann Collgan who wanted him to say hello.

Dale Bronson reported that he met with his transplant doctor and all is great.  He will also have the opportunity to see in October the two people that saved his life, his donor and his doctor.  His three grand kids are now back in school.  They all said that they had the best summer of their lives and so did he.

Phil Mikkelson reports that he is doing really well.  He reminded everyone how important it is to receive those e-mail.  He also noted the various sports teams that he supports along with a go UCONN.

Larry Sullivan and Richard Heath each shared a very funny joke with the club.  (Editorial Comment:  You need to attend to share in the laughter and camaraderie)

Eric Hammerling, our guest speaker gave two happy dollars.  He wanted to acknowledge the great work the club does and he wanted to send positive thoughts to Hank Frey.

Eric Hammerling
Executive Director
CT Forest and Park Association

Eric has been Executive Director of CFPA since 2008.  It is the oldest private non-profit conservation organization in CT having been established in Simsbury in 1895.  It is dedicated to connecting people to the land in order to protect forests, parks, walking trails, and open spaces in Connecticut for future generations.

The CFPA and volunteers more than 825 miles marked with blue rectangular blazes (including the Metacomet and  Tunxis trail systems. These trail systems offers a great way to explore the woodlands, remote ridges, and wild places of Connecticut. The trails are open year-round to all forms of foot travel (unless otherwise posted). Volunteers dedicated 29,000 hours to help with CFPA projects in 2016 alone.  CFPA prints a wonderful book that has directions and maps for all of the blue blazed trails.

Eric in particular noted that the State Park System is not protected and the legislature can and has sold and traded these public lands.  CFPA has an ongoing campaign to have a constitutional amendment to make sure that any changes to public lands are done through an open process and not hidden from public view.  In these current economic times, we are seeing the park system cut, maintenance deferred, and the beauty of our lands at risk.  They would also like to see a small fee added to license renewal to fund our park system and have the system open without charge to the residents of CT.

“The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do”:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all Concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
