Nancy Nation and her husband, Craig, celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary.

Salin Low paid a voluntary fine for forgetting her Rotary pin and being tardy with the Early Riser. She completed the newsletter early in the week, but never hit the send button.

Bob Cave reported that he and his wife had also celebrated a significant wedding anniversary.

Peter Vignati was happy that Suzanne had received a positive report on a benign polyp following her first colonoscopy.

Brian O'Donnell needs more volunteers to help with the Chess Club when schools start in Hartford.  Several members spoke up on the spot.

Larry Haber was happy to be headed to Saratoga Springs this weekend.

Les Zinner is headed south to Cherokee, North Carolina, to watch the eclipse.  His comment prompted several questions on a source for eclipse glasses.

Alicia Canning is so happy to be a new member of the club and despite not being a morning person has enjoyed coming to morning meetings.

Rollie Sterrett provided this week's joke: A man was attempting unsuccessfully to launch a kite in the back yard.  After repeated successful attempts, his wife yelled to him that he needed some tail. With a very confused look on his face, he yelled back to her, "Make up your mind. Last night you told me to go fly a kite!"

Nancy Harris said today was the last day to submit ads for publication in the tournament magazine. Tee signs are still available for resale. Raffle items can be found for another couple of weeks.

Larry Sullivan is hoping for 180 golfers based on the current trend. Last year we had only 127 golfers which we have already exceed by 30 or more.  He praised Len Dunstan for seeking out Ben Dunning who bought a tee sign and paid his dues and Foundation check in the process.  Steve Harris attended the recent Calhoun event and found out that several food vendors might we willing to be present on the course for our event.  Larry is in discussion with one of them.

Gina was very pleased with the award and said that they served 170 students last year an know of over 1000 students that would benefit from the program.

Phil Klemarczyk received a check for $500 to help with the Canton Connections after-school program at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Collinsville.  The program is over 20 years old and gives needy students a place to go after school to receive enrichment and join with other Canton school students. The program was originally started by Audrey Scanlon of Canton.

Craig Buhrendorf
Traveling in Central America

Craig has been inspiring us for years with his photographs from trips around the world with his wife, Jean. This morning put together a summary of the trips they took to Central America during the period 2013-2015. Today's journey starts in Belize in 2013 and concludes in Nicaragua in 2015.

BELIZE

The trip to Belize happened to coincide with Jean's birthday. Rather than follow the touristy routes, they chose to visit a Mayan temple ruin that is not typically a tourist destination. Consequently they had the ruin almost entirely to themselves.

On another day they visited the ATM Cave.  ATM is stands for three Mayan words.  They had to hike for 45 minutes, wade, and swim their way to the cave. Craig did not have a photo since they were not allowed. The cave held three skeletons of ancient Mayans.

GUATAMALA

The next trip was to Antiqua, Guatamala, where they stayed in a small bungalow with a beautiful view of the lake.

PANAMA CITY

This trip took them to the Panama Canal to watch large ships coming through the canal. They also saw part of the construction of a new widened section of the canal. A visit to a tribal village included the usual picture of a local child. A side trip the city of David allowed them to get is some horse riding.

GRANADA, NICARAGUA

This trip coincided with their 25th Wedding Anniversary.  The views included a crater lake and an active volcano.  They had an opportunity to watch sea turtle eggs hatch.  Their lodgings include "Breakfast on the Farm".

Needless to say, Craig's pictures were outstanding as usual and made it very difficult for this week's newsletter scribe to keep up with taking notes and enjoying all the great photos.  If you attended the meeting, you certainly had a great show.

Mail Bag

We received a Thank You note from the Special Olympics of CT for the gift of $500 received on July 31st to support their statewide programs.

“The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do”:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all Concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
