The Gig Economy and the Future of Work
Bill Budde
Sue Budde introduced our newest member, Bill Budde. Bill said that prior to retirement his business involved connecting people with projects in the Gig economy. As opposed to the Sharing Economy in which participants trade assets, workers in the Gig Economy use digital platforms to transact business. Digital platforms connect people who need work with those who have work to be performed. The approximate number of people in the Gig Economy is growing rapidly from 50 million to 150 million. COVID rapidly accelerated the transition.

Bill provided an overview of the key characteristics of the gig economy, including flexibility, online platforms connecting workers with work, and growth projections. He noted opportunities for workers but also challenges regarding regulations and worker protections.

Bill discussed the benefits of the gig economy for workers, including flexibility to work when and where they want. Millennials and boomers are most able to take advantage of gig opportunities. However, lack of benefits and job security are concerns. The rate and payment for the work is all transacted through the platform.

The future of work and the gig economy
Traditional employment is declining as more embrace gig opportunities and remote work. This impacts companies' need for office space and how they access skilled labor. Ongoing changes to labor laws and regulations will shape the future trajectory of the gig economy. Minorities and people with special needs are over-represented in this economy.

Growth of major gig economy platforms
Bill highlighted Uber's rapid growth from $120M to $37B annually, demonstrating platforms' ability to scale globally. This opens opportunities for other startups and small businesses to compete alongside big companies via these platforms.

Regulation and challenges of the gig economy
Bill discussed calls for updated labor laws, service regulations, and transparency regarding ethics and diversity. While the gig economy promotes inclusion, concerns remain around wage stability, benefits access, and the relationship between platforms and dependent workers. Overall the future remains uncertain as these issues are addressed.

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all Concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
