No Club members celebrated a birthday this week. However, glamorous movie actress Hedy Lamarr was born on August 21, 1914 in Austria. Her films include the much praised "Boom Town" with Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy. Lamarr died January 19, 2000. She was posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014 for two inventions having to do with frequency-hopping communications. Because of her work, cellphone signals are not easily intercepted or jammed. She must never be confused with Hedley Lamarr.

Nancy Nation - reported that her doctor says she is in "full remission." Additionally, Nancy's niece's wedding last Saturday was a huge success. Nancy co-officiated. This past Monday, Nancy and Craig celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary.
Robin DiNicola - thanked Mike Garcia for the YMCA membership that her son Jack won. Jack accompanied his Mom to the Club meeting. He soon will be starting the sixth grade. He will again be playing hockey for the CT Chiefs.
Sue Budde -detailed that many Rotarians attended Tuesday's Dog Star Rescue fundraiser at the Avon Bertucci's. The restaurant manager told Sue that business during the event exceeded what the restaurant does on a typical Saturday.
Salin Low - will miss the next meeting because she will be in New York City.
Ben Dunning - and his wife Donna were able to "sneak away" for a day without the kids. They also have begun college searches along with their daughter. They have already narrowed the choices down to Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont, Sacred Heart University in Stamford, and Southern New Hampshire University in Hooksett, NH.
Thor Cheyne - reported that his son is coming home from California after his successful internship there. Meanwhile, his youngest daughter starts at Gettysburg College soon. Thor also stated that the golf ads are coming in.
Joanne Santiago - explained that Bill Barnes was not at the meeting because it's Bill's and wife Pat's 58th wedding anniversary. Additionally, Joanne had a Happy Dollar to celebrate Nancy Nation's "full remission" news. Other members honoring Nancy's great news included: Linda Pendergast, Jolly Lux and Gary Miller.
Linda Pendergast- was glad to be back at a Club meeting. She has been at the shore all summer.
Phil Worley - thanked Heather Pantano for being today's greeter.
Gary Miller - announced he has been "called back into duty."He has accepted an invitation to be the Business Manager of the Waterbury School System for the next 3 to 6 months. Gary will be working out of Waterbury's Chase Building.

Avon Day Message from Steve Harris
Hello all. I would like to request your help for Avon Day, Saturday Sept. 26, behind Pine Grove and Thompson Brook schools in Avon. I need Rotarians to serve and cook food, and then clean up at the end of the day. Please let me know if you can fill the following shifts: 11:00 to 1:00; or 1:00 to 3:00; or 3:00 to closing (includes clean up). Thanks in advance for your service!
Sam Collins Day - A Message From President Gary
Sam Collins Day is only a month away on September 19th. Every year we have a hot dog and hamburger booth. I'll be passing around a sign-up sheet on the next couple of Fridays.
We need to cover set-up, cooking/serving, and break-down.
9:00-11:00 - Set-up
11:00-1:30 - Cook and serve burgers and hot dogs
1:30-4:00 - Cook/serve and clean-up
If you are unable to attend the meeting on Friday but would like to help out, please email your preferred work shift.

Farmington Rotary 5K Road Race
Runners may now register for the 8th Annual Rotary Club of Farmington 5K Road Race to be held on Sunday, September 27th in conjunction with the Unionville Festival. Online registration is available at www.RotaryRoadRace.org, along with the course description, a downloadable form for mail-in registration, and sponsor information. All ages from children through seniors may participate in one of four categories. Registration before September 10th is $30 and after that date is $35. All pre-registered runners are guaranteed a microfiber race t-shirt. The timed race begins at 1 p.m., with check-in beginning at 11 a.m. at the Gazebo in Unionville. Awards will be given to the top male and female winners and medals will be awarded to the top 3 male and female finishers in each of the four age categories.

The next Rotary Pub Night is just around the corner!!! It will be held Wednesday, September 2nd, at the SaybrookFish House.
As you have heard a few times, Rotary Pub Nightis all about socializing, networking and getting to know your fellow Rotarians and their guests better. Bring your spouses, significant others, partners, friends, prospective Rotarians, etc. RPN now alternates between Tuesday and Wednesday each month to accommodate Rotarians who can participate on one of those days but not the other.
Avon Day/Amber Alert
Avon Day is scheduled for September 26. Tom Voorhees has detailed that there will be an Amber Alert session at Avon Day. He is in need of volunteers.

Nancy Nation and Thor Cheyne have stated that members should still be looking for more ads and sponsors and more golfer registrations.
Induction Ceremony
Don Rosslerofficially rejoined the Rotary Club of Avon-Canton after an absence of several years. He was sponsored by Len Dunstan. Don is a Past President of the Club. He was accompanied today by his two sons Drew and Michael.
Readings were given by President Gary, Dale Bronson, Nancy Nation, Tom Voorhees and Salin Low.
Paul Harris Pin Ceremony
Gary Roman was presented with his Paul Harris Plus One Pin, a milestone reached based on a member's donations to the Rotary Foundation. He received his pin from Joanne Santiago who is the Chair of the Club's Rotary Foundation Committee.

Junior Achievement

A non-profit with Connecticut offices in Hartford and Fairfield County, Junior Achievement helps students K-12 learn living skills that they will need to know throughout their lives. High School students learn about personal banking, paying taxes and other financial skills. Younger students are taught to differentiate wants versus needs and to take personal inventories so that they know what they are good at and what do they want to do.
Volunteers have information they have read before they go into the classroom, but their presentations are largely unscripted and spontaneous. They use their knowledge and experience to teach.
Two Club members have actually done volunteer work in Junior Achievement classrooms. Mike Garcia shared that the kids excitement about learning was "awesome." He encourages everyone to try it. Robin DiNicola remembered that she brought props when she went into the classroom. She explained to students the difference between importing and exporting. Robin stated that the "kids loved it, and it was a lot of fun."
There are Junior Achievement programs in several Avon Public School buildings, including: Pine Grove, Thompson Brook, Roaring Brook and the high school. Michelle is looking for help in her efforts to bring Junior Achievement into the Canton Schools.
Robin Johnson, the Director of Development, explained that some corporations work through Junior Achievement to "adopt a school." They then provide the schools with financial support and volunteers from their work force.
(Coincidentally, Junior Achievement was started by two Rotarians in Springfield, MA.)
Condolences
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Club member Chuck Joseph whose mother passed away Monday, August 24. Our sympathy goes out as well to Chuck's wife Debbie and their children.
This week, we also remember Rosalie Renfrew, a former member of the Club. We have just learned, she passed away August 4.
