Luiz deMoura Castro - Update

Every effort is being made to reschedule Luiz deMoura Castro, the world renown classical pianist who was scheduled to perform at last Friday's meeting. It may very well be springtime before he is able to join us. Don Bonner will update.

RIP Dick MacGowan

Former Avon-Canton Rotary Club member Dick MacGowan passed away on January 20th at the Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. He is survived by his wife Patricia who was also an Avon-Canton member.

Dick attended Harvard and Georgetown University and then went to work for the National Security Agency. He later enjoyed a long career with Honeywell.

In recent years, Dick was an active member of the Yarmouth Rotary Club, and he volunteered frequently at the Cape Cod Hospital.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Roxbury Latin School (which Dick attended), 101 Saint Teresa Avenue, West Roxbury, MA 02132.

Obit for Lisa Barall-Matt's Father-In-Law

Richard J. Matt, of Avon, passed away, Monday, February 1, 2016. His career as an engineer, he held various positions with engineering companies, He was particularly proud that he was involved in the design team that developed the first heart lung machine. During his professional career he registered 24 US patents, authored 19 articles on engineering and management subjects, and was a member of various professional engineering associations. In his community life, he was a member of the Avon Chamber of Commerce He was a great showman who could mystify audiences at all levels.

His family will receive friends, Sunday February 14, 2016, from 2-3 pm at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon. A Service in Celebration of his Life will begin at 3 pm follow by a reception. Contributions in his memory may be made to the CT Children's Medical Center, 282 Washington St., Hartford, CT, 06106, where he performed many magic shows to benefit the children.

The Community Service Committee will meet Friday, February 12th at the conclusion of the regular meeting.

Craig Buhrendorf and Jeane Best arrived safely in Capetown, South Africa yesterday (February 10).

Bike Ride May 2nd

Paul Mikkelson has outlined the Club Bike Ride scheduled for Saturday, May 2nd. Club members will congregate at Sperry Park and head north along the Rails for Trails. The Ride will be an All Levels event in the sense that members will be encouraged to travel, including the return trip, only as far as they can comfortably handle. It is not yet determined how far north the hardier riders will travel.

Constitution and Bylaws

Don Bonner is looking for two members who would be willing to go through the Constitution and Bylaws with the intention of updating and revising them. Anyone who is interested should contact Don. He will be the Club President from July 2016 through June 2017.

Bev has performed throughout the Northeast in venues including The Iron Horse, The Village Vanguard, the Newport Jazz Festival as a featured vocalist for such Big Bands as Mel Lewis' Jazz Orchestra and the National Jazz Ensemble.

Her album credits include: “Symphony in Black,” a Smithsonian release; and “No Frills” by the Persuasions. (Rohlehr is the only woman ever to work with them). She has appeared on TV in two episodes of the award winning children's show Grover's Corner.

John Colby

(Keyboards and Vocals)

Grammy, Ace and Emmy award-winning composer and producer, John received a Grammy for Ken Burns' “Civil War” soundtrack and an Ace was for ESPN's “Outside the Lines”. A composer of hundreds of TV sports themes including ESPN's Emmy winning Sportscenter, he was responsible for shaping the sound of the world's largest cable network.

He has been Music Director for the ESPY Awards since its inception, The Player's Choice, NASCAR, Indy 500 and College Basketball award shows on ESPN.

He has performed with, among others: Ray Charles, Bill Murray, Tony Bennett, Willie Nelson, Delbert McClinton, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Duane Eddy Clarence Clemons and Grand Master Flash.

35^th Anniversary Celebration:

“At the Movies: The Silent Years”

Feb. 27, 4:00 and 8:00 p.m., Hoffman Auditorium

University of St. Joseph, West Hartford

Presenting Three Classic Silent Films

Accompanied by a New Musical Score

“The Beloved Rogue” - John Barrymore

“Blood & Sand” - Rudolph Valentino

“The Gold Rush” - Charlie Chaplin

The presentation of three classic silent films, projected above the stage and accompanied by a new musical score by William Perry, will be the highlight of the Farmington Valley Symphony Orchestra’s 35^th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, Feb.27 at the Hoffman Auditorium, University of St. Joseph, 1678 Asylum Ave., West Hartford. Performances will be at 4:00 and 8:00 p.m.

The films will feature three beloved early motion picture stars, John Barrymore in “The Beloved Rogue,” Rudolph Valentino in “Blood and Sand” and Charlie Chaplin in “The Gold Rush.” Under the baton of Music Director Jonathan Edward Brennand, the FVSO will be joined by guest piano soloist, Nadine Shank. The award-winning composer of “The Silent Years,” William Perry, will speak at each performance.

The program will also include three additional works associated with motion pictures: Leonard Bernstein’s “Overture to West Side Story,” Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings” and Alexandar Borodin’s “Polovetsian Dances” from which several melodies in the Broadway musical “Kismet” were derived.

Tickets for the concert can be purchased in advance online at $18 for adults; $15 for students/seniors. All concert tickets purchased at the door will be $20. Tickets for the reception including food and drink will be at $25 and can also be purchased online or at the door.

Speakers Needed

Hello,

We are in need of speakers. We are booked through March 4th and open beyond that date.

Please give some thought to people and groups that you think we would enjoy hearing from. While we are not interested in someone selling or at least trying to, we are open to hearing about products, services and hobbies. In the past year we've had great programs about wine and 3-D printing as examples.

We have a varied group of members with a lot going on in their lives. I'm sure people can bring forward some interesting speakers and subjects.

If you have never brought in a speaker or it's been a while, please help us out.

If you have any questions just contact me and we'll talk about it.

Dear District 7890 Members - Get Ready!!

The District Conference is planned for April 29 to May 1st at the Cape Codder Resort & Spa in Hyannis, MA. Our theme is Hawaii 7890.

The Cape Codder Resort & Spa is right off the highway and offers convenient parking. We plan to begin on Friday evening at 6 pm with a cocktail hour followed by a delicious Luau dinner.

We are also planning an exciting evening of entertainment. More to come on that.

On Saturday our general session at will begin at 9:00 am with registration and breakfast starting at 7:30 am. Saturday will be filled with exciting breakouts, as well as our Rotaract Conference. If you have a Rotaract Club or are thinking of starting one, be sure to be part of this. Youth exchange students and the South African VTT teams will also be presenting.

It’s been a great year for District 7890 and we plan to celebrate with fellowship and informative breakout sessions. And if anyone can inspire enthusiasm, it's our Rotaractors, Youth exchange students, and VTT teams; they’re an exciting bunch.

Rotary Pub Night

Dear Rotarians:

Our next Rotary Pub Night (RPN) will be Tuesday evening, March 1st, approximately 4:30 - 6:30 pm. Phil Worley will announce the location soon.

RPN is all about socializing, networking and getting to know your fellow Rotarians and their guests better. Bring your spouses, significant others, partners, friends, prospective Rotarians, socialists, sodalists, soloists, etc.

You may, of course, come and go whenever you want to.
