Happy Dollars
Happy Dollars began with guest Terri Wilson who, on behalf of the Avon Historical Society, asked Club members to consider donating to a GoFundMe.com account that has been established to fund the restoration of the 18th century Derrin Farm House. The House is located at 249 West Avon Road. It was damaged in a fire, but is considered structurally sound and restorable. Persons interested in making a donation can do so by going to www.gofundme.com/derrin. Checks can be mailed to Avon Historical Society, P.O. Box 448, Avon, CT 06001.
Club President Gary Miller announced that all Happy Dollars from the meeting would go to the Derrin House Restoration.
Bill Barnes - detailed three Happy Dollars:
* The Farmington Valley Symphony Orchestra will be performing Sunday, June 5th. (See Below).
* It's back to work for Bill who has accepted an interim pastor position at West Hartford United Methodist for June and July.
* Bill has accepted two guest speaking gigs. They will take place this summer.
Craig Buhrendorf - a Yankee fan, Craig acknowledged, in the most laudatory terms, Red Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr.'s lengthy hitting streak. Craig also detailed that he and Jeane will be spending a "cultural weekend" (no Yankee game) in New York City. Their activities will include attendance at a performance of "Kinky Boots."
Don Bonner - updated on his daughter Sarah's Basketball Court Project in the Dominican Republic. The Club has donated $3,000 towards this Peace Corps/Courts for Kids initiative. Fifteen young volunteers have come in to help with the construction and renovations.
Len Dunstan - stated that he is proud of the Club and the large number of Club members who were in attendance at the recent Chamber of Commerce Meeting. Rotarians Bruce Sayward and Robin DiNicola were honored at the COC meeting, with Bruce receiving "Small Business of the Year" honors and Robin receiving a Community Award.
Thor Cheyne - was happy to be back after time spent in Dallas and Miami. He gave extra Happy Dollars for the Derrin House.
Steve Roberto - reported that his 13 year old daughter has been accepted at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts for the 2016-17 school year. She plays the guitar and sings. Her band has many gigs lined up. They recently played the Maple Tree in Simsbury.
Joanne Santiago - enjoyed attending the recent Dollars for Scholars ceremony at Avon High School. Next Friday, she and daughter Joelle will be going to see Beyoncé in concert.
Linda Pendergast - is relieved that her daughter doesn't have to move to San Diego because of business reasons. Her daughter's company was sold to a company in Old Lyme, so everyone gets to stay put.
Deb Key - a guest at today's meeting, Deb, who is originally from Australia, shared that she was a Rotary YEX student in the United States 40 years ago this year.
Ann Clark - outlined that her oldest granddaughter is on her way home after attending school at Saint Andrew's in Scotland. Ann stated that studying in Scotland has been the experience of a lifetime, and her granddaughter has enjoyed "every Scottish tradition you can think of."
Greg DeManche - updated on his children. His oldest son is now an engineer at UTC. His second son just graduated Magna Cum Laude. His daughter won three awards at Avon High School's recent Honors Night.
Larry Sullivan - is happy that his granddaughter is now a college graduate.
Phil Worley - reminded all that the June Pub Night will be June 7 at Max-A-Mia's in Avon. The July RPN will be July 5th at Wilson's Pub in Collinsville. (See Below).
Robin DiNicola - thanked Don Bonner for speaking at the recent Avon Chamber of Commerce Night.
Larry Haber - has a wedding to attend on Saturday. He is not overly thrilled to have a wedding on a holiday weekend.
Bruce Sayward - thanked all the Club members who attended the recent Avon COC meeting. He was happy that Robin DiNicola won a Community Award because "she gives back an awful lot."
Gary Miller - gave five Happy Dollars to help out with the Derrin House repairs.
Announcements
This Is Where The Money Goes...
Golf Chair Larry Sullivan shared that the "golf committee is in the works." So that Club members will better understand how deserving the tournament is of their volunteer time, he asked International Committee Chair Craig Buhrendorf to go over recent donations given out to foreign projects. These are donations made possible by the net profit of the tournament.
Craig outlined the following contributions:
* Guiding Light Orphans, Inc. - $3,000: water tank for health clinic in Masindi, Uganda.
* St. Patrick's Ecumenical Haiti Ministry (St. Patrick's Parish, Collinsville) - $2,000: computers/supplies for St. Therese School, Lilavois, Haiti.
* Kateri Medical Services (Trinity Episcopal Church, Tariffville) - $2,000: medical supplies for clinic near Kaduna, Nigeria.
* Manchester Rotary Club/District 7890/Rotary Foundation - $2,500: water/sanitation projects in San Lucas and Patzaj, Guatemala.
* Peace Corps/Courts for Kids/Sarah Bonner - $3,000: refurbishment of public basketball court in Hato Viejo, Dominican Republic.
Amber Alert Sessions
Tom Voorhees shared that there were three Amber Alert Sessions this past week. All of them went well. There will be a session at the Cherrybrook School June 3rd from 4 to 8. The Rentschler Field session will take place June 5th. Tom is still looking for volunteers.
Salvation Army Plaque
Don Bonner displayed a recognition plaque given to the Club by the Salvation Army. Over the last year, the Rotary Club of Avon-Canton has donated and/or raised over $6,000 for the Salvation Army.
President's Dinner

Salin Low has detailed that the President's Dinner will be held June 17 at Farmington Woods. A vegetarian main course has been added. The cost will be $45 per person. A sign-up sheet continues to be circulated. Assistant District Governor Hap Leabman will be at the dinner.
Community Service Committee
Paul Mikkelson has announced that the Community Service Committee will meet this Friday, June 3rd, immediately after the regular Club meeting.
Farmington Savings Bank Is In
Nancy Nation revealed that Farmington Savings Bank will once again be the Major Sponsor for the Annual Golf Tournament. FSB has graciously been the tournament's Major Sponsor for many, many years.
Before the meeting, Nancy received the first Golf Ad check of the year. She urges all members to get their golf ads in sooner rather than later.
Root, Root, Root for the Home Team
To bring a little more fun to selling golf ads, sponsorships, tee signs and registrations, Paul Mikkelson is dividing Club members up according to their baseball affiliations. The Yankees? The Red Sox? The Mets? Which "team" will bring in the most money for the golf tournament? Stay tuned for updates!! Meanwhile, get out there and start selling!!
Rotary Pub Night

Be sure to bring your friends, spouses, partners, significant others, etc. to the next Pub Night on June 7th. The location will be the Avon Max-a-Mia's.
RPN is held on the first Tuesday of each month. Rotary Pub Night is all about networking, getting to know each other better and, usually, having a lot of laughs. We hope to see you all there.
The July RPN will be held July 5th at Wilson's Pub in Collinsville.

Farmington Valley Symphony Orchestra Outdoor Concert
"American Salute"
Sunday, June 5, 4:00 pm - Lawn of First Church, Farmington
The Farmington Valley Symphony Orchestra will conclude its 35th Anniversary season with an outdoor concert, "American Salute," on Sunday, June 5, 4:00 pm on the Lawn of First Church, Congregational, 75 Main Street, Farmington.
In the words of Music Director Jonathan Edward Brennand, "we will celebrate all things American," by featuring such works as Gould's, "American Salute," Ward's "From Sea to Shining Sea," Anderson's "Bugler's Holiday," Williams' "Star Wars Suite" as well as music by Copland and a march by Souza.
Concert goers are invited to come early with lawn chairs and picnic supplies. Parking is available on Church Street at the library next door to the church.
Tickets may be purchased online at the web site: http://www.fvso.org, $18 adults, $15 students/seniors. At the concert, all tickets will be $20. For more information, please visit the web site or call (800) 975-FVSO. In case of rain, the concert will move indoors.
GLO Fest
Together, Guiding Light Orphans, Inc. and Simsbury United Methodist Church are going to be holding their first fundraising event of the year, GLO-Fest, on Saturday June, 11th from 5:30 – 8:30 PM at West Granby United Methodist Church, 87 Simsbury Road, West Granby, CT. All proceeds go to support the Simsbury United Methodist Church, volunteers in mission, Uganda medical mission, in cooperation with Guiding Light Orphans.
GLO-Fest is an outdoor concert and family picnic that will be held rain or shine, with music by The Preiser & O’Brien Band, a popular local band that has played many venues in the area. There will be raffle items as well as some other fun activities for both adults and children. Those interested in attending are encouraged to bring a picnic, lawn chairs, and blankets. Drinks and desserts will be provided and this will be an alcohol-free event.
Tickets will be a suggested donation of $10 per person or $30 for a family. Tickets can be purchased online before the event athttp://GLO-FEST.com or by cash or check only at the door.

Bargain Rate - 2017 RI Convention
To honor and celebrate our Rotary Foundation's Centennial in June 2017, there is a special convention promotion rate available for 10 days only from May 28th through June 6th, Arch Klumph's birthday.
Take advantage of this bargain. The rate is $265/Rotarian and $265/non-Rotarian so bring your partner, your spouse or a friend along.
After June 6th, until December 15th, the rate will be $340, an increase of $75/person. From December 16th through March 31st, the rate will increase another $75/person. Then again, after March 31st, there is another $75/person.
This is not a time for Rotarians to delay until the last minute to register!
