Bruce Corbett

"A Siblings Point of View"

Steve Morris introduced our speaker, Bruce Corbett, who is the older brother of a FAVARH client. Bruce lives in Avon and taught Social Studies in Burlington. According to Bruce, he was born in 1940 and his brother, Dave, was born in 1947. In 1948 Bruce contracted polio. His brother, Dave, was very slow in development and would later be diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Bruce spent a period of time in the hospital being treated for polio.

His relationship with his brother was difficult but they found ways to have fun together. Bruce took his brother on his paper route with Dave riding in the large front basket for the newspapers. The family took weekly trips to Philadelphia for his brother's treatments. His parents tried very hard to make the trips enjoyable by stopping for picnics  and other amusements. Once Bruce reached High School age, his brother was attending a special school. The family had moved to Bridgeport, CT.

Eventually Bruce left for college, marriage and a family of his own in Avon.  Dave remained with his parents and by then was able to use a cane and get around the house holding on to the furniture. The parent's visits to Avon to spend time with Bruce provided a period of R&R.

When their mother was diagnosed with cancer changes had to be made. After his mother passed, Bruce decided to put an addition on his home to accommodate his father and brother. During that period his father had made contact with FAVARH and arranged a group home for Dave.  When their father died in 2001, Dave was 54. Bruce became Dave's primary caretaker and depended on the serves provided by FAVARH.

Bruce said the his parents, like many other parents of disabled children, always worried what would happen to Dave when they were no longer able to care for him. Bruce said that due to FAVARH he does not have to worry about Dave. Dave is now 71 and they are both very happy with the services he receives.

Bruce was very thankful of Rotary's support of FAVARH and the many other programs impacted by donations.

A period of Q&A followed. Steve Morris spoke briefly about the SEARCH Program at UCONN Health. The program has existed in CT for 2 years and provides a full immersion business model for the participants. They have a training rotation at the hospital and learn skills to help around the hospital.

“The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do”:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all Concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
