Dear Fellow Rotarians and Friends,

As you may have heard, fellow Rotarian and Rotary past president Philip E. Worley, ...."Phil"....  passed away this morning June 30, 2023 at 1:00 AM. His daughter Robin informed me by text message this morning and, as it happened, I was having breakfast with some of you at the "Lonely Rotarians Society Breakfast", a regular event which I believe was Phil Worley's original idea, for "lonely" Rotarians during non-meeting and holiday weeks.

Phil's family, knowing he was failing, had previously informed me that they will delay his memorial service into the early Fall, when all their family can be together, so other than perhaps cards and the like, there is no urgency for any immediate action on our part.

Colleagues, Phil was a dear friend to me, and I know he was also to many of you. So, with the agreement of those who attended this morning's Lonely Rotarian's Society Breakfast, I submit this brief Special Edition Commemorative Early Riser in honor of our friend, Philip E. Worley Jr., Air Force veteran, engineer, entrepreneur, athlete, firefighter, pilot, civic leader, Rotarian, husband, father, grandfather and friend. Phil is back together with his beloved wife Kathy, and may he rest in peace. God bless you friend.

Lonely Rotarians Society meeting, 2017

One of Phil's last Rotary meetings, near his birthday, 2021

Phil awarding me with a Community Paul Harris, with Peter Vignati looking on, 2016.

Phil cycling with daughter Jen McCormack on Nantucket, 2014

Phil with his beloved Blue Front Amazon parrot Malcolm, 2021

And again with Malcolm, 2014 ("Phil, Phil, Phil" said Malcolm)

Phil with Kathy, receiving Canton Chamber of Commerce' Service Award, October 16, 2016

Looking on are Gary Miller and Chuck Joseph.

Apart from his family and his dedication to community service, another of Phil's passions was aviation, in all its forms. The following series of images tell that story!

Phil at EAA Airventure (also known as "Oshkosh") July 29, 2005

(The aircraft is a North American T-6 Texan, used to train Air Force pilots beginning during WW2  and into the 1970s)

Phil with famed aerobatic pilot Julie Clark and yours truly at Simsbury Airport, September 2005

Phil at Great Barrington Airport, 2006

Right to Left, Phil, unknown gentleman, my wife Jill, another unknown gentleman.

Simsbury Flying Club Luau, Simsbury Airport, 2006

Phil at Sky Acres Airport restaurant, Millbrook, NY, October 2014

Phil having breakfast at the remodeled Sky Acres Airport restaurant, September 12, 2021.

(Mind you, I'd known Phil since 1996 and had never known him to have anything for breakfast besides black coffee, orange juice and dry Rye toast! Clearly he'd decided it was time to live it up!)

Phil posing with my airplane, a 2005 Mooney M20M Bravo, at Hartford-Brainard Airport, Sunday August 14, 2022

(Unknown to me at the time, this was the final outing I'd have with Phil. We went to the airport, a McDonalds and Kathy's grave at the cemetery in Canton before returning to Anthology, where he resided at the time.)

And in conclusion, RIP to our friend......heart.....

......and in final tribute......

 "High Flight"

By John G. Magee

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds,-and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of-wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,

I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace

Where never lark nor ever eagle flew-
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod

The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God
